Out of all of the courses that come under the T.A.S. umbrella, Information and Software Technology is generally accepted as having the greatest impact on students lives, now and into the future.
People can expect to work and live in environments requiring highly developed levels of computing and technological literacy. They will be expected to adapt to changes in technology as they occur and will require life long learning.
With this in mind, the Information and Software Technology courses at Smith's Hill High School aims to:STAGE FOUR
All students in Years 7 and 8 are required to complete four mandatory technology courses to meet the requirements for the school certificate. All mandatory courses involve students completing practical design projects in three areas of study:
To complete projects students will use several technologies in specialized rooms such as: food, graphics, media, textiles, timber, electronics, information and metals.
STAGE 5
Following the mandatory technology courses, students have the opportunity to elect to do further study in Information and Software Technology. Students can select from the following electives:
Get Animated
"Overture. .curtains.... lights; This is it, will hit the heights". Learn about the basic principles of computer animation. Use Macromedia Flash to create motion 'tween animations. Learn how to morph shapes and characters. Get involved in projects such as producing an animated movie clip for a song.
WebMaster of the Universe
Where the school is our universe! Be part of the team developing web pages for teachers and students and developing an internet and intranet web site for the school. From hubs to wireless you can master it all.
I, Robot
Demons, agents and neural nets. No, this is not some strange fantasy game. Welcome to the world of Artificial Intelligence. Build a robot. Learn how to make it your slave... maybe.
Public Image Limited
Express your artistic side. The computer is your palette, digital media is your canvas. Become a Photoshop wizard. Create your own music and podcast it to the world. Only limited by your imagination.
Gamer
Why spend your hard earned cash on expensive computer games when you can make your own! Learn to be a programming legend and along the way have some fun destroying a few hunched sprites.
SENIOR STUDY
STAGE 6
There are two Board of Studies Developed courses that seniors may elect to study in senior school:
Whilst the junior Elective are not a pre-requisite for studying the above course in the Senior school, students do find the experiences and skills gained in these electives is beneficial to Senior work.
Qualifications and Exams
All students are required to undertake an exam in Computing Skills for the School Certificate. This exam is based on knowledge and skills taught in the junior mandatory course. This is an on line test. Students studying junior elective courses are eligible for a School Certificate qualification in Information and Software Technology provided sufficient hours of study are completed. Students completing any two middle school electives are entitled to a 100-hour qualification. Students completing any three subjects are entitled to a 200-hour qualification.
Students who successfully complete the requirements of the senior curse are entitled to a Higher School Certificate qualification in these subjects.
